Walmart just told you what the next 12-18 months of retail ops is going to look like

650+ remodels. About 20 new store openings through early 2027.

And the part everyone wants to copy... expanding pickup and delivery (including express) as a standard feature of the refreshed box.

They also claim they can reach 95% of US households with delivery in three hours or less (likely true, this is their stores and their coverage is the biggest weapon they have against Amazon).

If you run store ops or omni fulfillment, the takeaway is not 'nice, they are investing'

It's that the store is being engineered like a high-velocity network node.

Layout, backroom, labor model, and digital touchpoints are being tuned for pick density and handoff speed.

They are using the warchest to build better, stronger and more flexible infrastructure (you know, the stuff everyone wants you to think has no value).

The uncomfortable implication for everyone else.

If your store remodel plan is still 'new paint + new signage', you are going to lose the battle for same-day demand before you even start.

The former Nordstrom department store space at the Mall at Wellington Green could be redeveloped into apartments.

Wellington-based apartment developer Bainbridge Cos. recently filed a development application with the village concerning about 18.4 acres of the mall at 10300 Forest Hill Blvd. It has the former Nordstrom building under contract from TM Wellington Green Mall, care of Starwood Capital Group.

According to the application, Bainbridge aims to build 620 apartments in three buildings of seven stories each, plus a clubhouse and a parking garage.

In the application, Brian Terry of planning firm Insite Studio noted that the value of the Mall at Wellington Green has declined significantly since the mall was purchased for $341.1 million in 2014. The property valuation was reduced from $220 million at the time of sale to $70 million recently, resulting in significantly less tax revenue for the village, he noted. The development of apartments would boost property values and fall in line with the Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council’s goal of redeveloping properties along the State Road 7 corridor, Terry noted.

“The Mall at Wellington Green remains a functioning regional retail destination,” Terry stated in the application. “The property benefits from one of the top-performing Apple Store locations in the region, has seen meaningful tenant renewals in recent years, and continues to draw consistent traffic from a broad and affluent trade area. Unlike many of its peer properties nationally, the mall has retained its core tenant base and its identity as a community gathering point for Palm Beach County's western communities. The vacancy created by the former Nordstrom anchor is not a symptom of mall failure — it is a reflection of a national trend that has affected even the strongest retail centers.” https://www.bizjournals.com/southflorida/news/2026/04/06/620-units-planned-at-wellington.html?csrc=6398&utm_campaign=trueAnthemTrendingContent&utm_medium=social&utm_source=linkedin
